Little Engineers Club
Sets Record Attendance from
August 2005 through September 2007

More than a month before the August 2005 meeting of our Little Engineers Club we knew that there would be at least three sessions but we were surprised when it required a record breaking forth session. And now in September of 2007 it has happened again with four standing room only sessions throughout the day.
(Above) after singing a song about the "Wabash Cannon Ball", Mr. Dave shows everyone where the Railroad actually ran using a Wabash Railroad Route Map. The map was donated to H&R Trains by a retired Wabash Railroad Employee many years ago.

All of our “Little Engineers” joined in singing with Mr. Dave some well-known Railroad songs and even learned the words to “Down by the Station,” to be sung later at home.

Our main attraction was a video of the famous singer, Johnny Cash, who was a very enthusiastic fan of railroads. We saw Johnny sing about two legendary railroad men: John Henry and Casey Jones. The songs about these men and about others, too, showed us that railroading has always been hard work and often is dangerous, as well. The many famous songs of railroading are lessons in history.

(At left) Dave uses pictures in a book to illustrate what a train wreck actually looks like that was the subject of another song.

Many of the songs presented during this Little Engineers Club were sung by railroad work crews while laying track. These workers were called "Gandy Dancers"

At our November 12th LEC meetings we learned about bells and whistles. H&R just happens to have a real locomotive bell.

Mr. Dave displayed the big, real-life, shiny brass bell on the table in our meeting room, and we saw how the clapper inside the bell makes it ring. It was very loud!

Also, Mr. Dave ran some model trains so we could hear their bells, steam whistles, and diesel horns, which make them sound just like real locomotives. Our activity used a locomotive cut-out onto which we connected a bell cut-out with a string to make it swing just like a real locomotive bell does.

We went outside and played the whistle game and, naturally, had our usual snack of cookies and juice.

Little Engineers is a Club for children ages 3-7 and is held one Saturday of each month at 10:30 am, 12:00 pm, 1:30 pm,and 3 pm. At each meeting the group learns a lesson about real trains, sing the club song, makes a craft project, has a snack and gets the opportunity to ring the real locomotive bell out on our garden railroad and receive a little engineers card.

For over a year now we have had to expand our classes to four sessions. They are filling up fast so get your reservation in early so you are assured a spot at our next Entertaining, and Educational, "H&R Trains Little Engineers Club".

Note: Since we are becoming booked up so far in advance please let us know if your plans change so that we can release your spot to someone else if you can not make it.

There is a $6.00 charge to help cover some of the costs for the class materials.
